Helical piles or helical piers are often referred to as metal piles, pipe piles or screw piles.

Helical piles are installed with a machine that screws them into the ground.

Helical piles consist of a either a hollow or solid metal shaft with one or more slanted discs of various sizes welded to it. The center shaft size is most often 1.5", 1.75" or 2 7/8" circumference. The discs or helices are most often a combination of 8"10"12" or 10"12"14"  though some engineers will specify other combinations or even single helices.

Once the lead piece is installed often one or more extension pieces are added to achieve the required depth. Lead pieces are typically 5' or 7' long. Extension pieces do not have helices, are typically 3', 5', or 7' long, and are bolted onto the lead section. The required depth is sometimes determined by soil borings or installation of test piles which are both done prior to our start.

And lastly once you hit the required depth the helical pile is usually terminated with a 6"x6" square steel cap though sometimes it requires an L shaped bracket or specialty cap.
